I’m sure when you read the name of this band you are offended, confused or intrigued. Obviously when you combine the words pussy with Lucifer you’re going to offend many into not wanting to listen to your music. Which I feel is exactly what Maynard James Keenan did with this band.
In my last post I talked about A Perfect Circle with front man Maynard James Keenan, of whom I’ve recently become infatuated with. APC was started Billy Howerdel and Maynard, with musical and lyrical influences from both. Puscifer is purely Maynard and his mysterious subconscious.
My first experience with the band came from sitting in my friend Spencer’s car, and he had it playing and I thought it was something different then what I normally listen too. But I was immediately hooked. It uses normal rock instruments but includes synthesizers and computer generated sounds. Maynard also alters his voice extremely low in a few of the songs. They describe it as Industrial Rock.
So on Nov. 9th, 2011, my friends and I went to the Capitol Theatre in SLC to watch a live performance from the band. They recently released an album “Conditions of My Parole” which features a female singer named Carina Round who not only has an amazing transcendent voice, but also has the looks to go along with it.
The concert was incredible. Carina Round has a solo band of which opened for Puscifer. She brought a standing ovation at the end. The concert was a mix of art, theater and music. To start Puscifer’s set, he showed about a 20 minute mock-umentary of a white trash hick couple (which are shown on the cover of the new album) and then Maynard hauled a small camper trailer onto the stage, and began setting up the stage, while giving a 20 minute rambling of what “Puscifer is. The stage consisted of what appeared to be a campsite! The music and imagery associated with it were stunning. Another band that is truly just as good if not better live. They played for about 2 hours, which consisted of some older songs and then every song off of their new album. Some notable songs were Vagina Mine (which was easily the best song of the night) Rev. 22:20, Horizons, Conditions of My Parole, Dozo and Man Overboard.
If you can get past being offended by the name of the band you should check out their music; especially if you’re into new age, electronic rock. They have become one of my favorite bands as of late.
